Fallen Officers Honored For Sacrifice
DENVER (CBS4)- Hundreds of police officers, sheriff's deputies and other law enforcement gathered to honor their fallen comrades.
They gathered for the 22nd annual Denver Police Department Law Enforcement Memorial Ceremony at the Denver Police Law Enforcement Memorial.
The names of 72 Denver Police Officers who have been killed in the line of duty were read so their sacrifice will never be forgotten.
New additions to the memorial wall include Special Officer Gustave Gisin, Jan. 24, 1893 and Special Officer Wendell P. Smith, Feb. 6, 1896.
Gisin, 60, was shot by a disgruntled employee who had been fired from a smelter shop several hours earlier. He died the next day of gunshot wounds to his chest. The shooter was arrested just minutes after the shooting.
Smith was shot by a man with a gun who was hiding behind the back door of a grocery store. Smith died just a couple of hours after being shot in the chest. His murderer was never captured.
