Expert Offers Tips On Getting Good Nutrition On A Budget
DENVER (CBS4) - A study from the University of Washington says the price of groceries may prevent many Americans from meeting nutritional guidelines. The researchers looked at what it costs to meet the new recommendations put out in the food pyramid.
Andrea Rouge with Cooking Matters Colorado stopped by CBS4's Help Center to talk about just how hard is it to get good nutrition on a budget. Watch her interview in the video below.
The new guidelines say Americans need to eat more foods with potassium, dietary fiber, vitamin D and calcium. The study says just trying to add the amount of potassium recommended is likely to add $380 a year to the average consumer's food cost.
The people who spent the most were most likely to get closest to the guidelines. Those who spent the least have the four lowest intakes of those recommended nutrients. The researchers say that shows the government needs to do more to help Americans be able to afford to eat better.
