Ex-Sheriff's Deputy To Be Sentenced In Fatal Crash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) — A former El Paso County sheriff's deputy convicted of careless driving resulting in the death of an Air Force reservist could be facing up to a year in jail.

Rodney Fannin is expected to be sentenced Wednesday. The crash killed 41-year-old Capt. Vivian Elmo last August.

Investigators said Fannin struck Elmo's vehicle after running a red light. He was off-duty at the time.

Fannin's attorney argued that Fannin had a green light. The attorney argued the lights at the intersection are faulty and can sometimes show green or yellow in all directions.

Fannin was on probation for a careless driving conviction when the crash happened. The sheriff's office fired him following an internal investigation stemming from the crash that killed Elmo.
