Electric Blanket Causes House Fire That Killed Cat
ARVADA, Colo. (CBS4) - Firefighters say an electric blanket caused an overnight house fire in Arvada.
Arvada fire sent CBS4 pictures of the flames around 4 a.m. Saturday.
Homeowners say they were using the blanket to keep a cat warm, but the blanket accidentally caught a chair on fire. The fire then spread to the garage and the attic.
"They took a large electric blanket and tri-folded it; so basically folded it in on top of itself," Scott Pribble with Arvada fire said.
All three people inside escaped after a smoke detector went off. The cat was killed.
The concentration of heat in one place from a folded electric blanket sparked the fire.
Police evacuated one home next door.
"I wanted to help put it out; not that I could do anything but throw snowballs," neighbor Mich Wolfe said.
Firefighters spent the morning putting out hotspots. The house suffered heavy damage, but was not a total loss.
