Elderly Man Found In Car Floating Down Clear Creek

WHEAT RIDGE, Colo. (CBS4/AP) - Authorities are investigating how a car driven by an elderly man ended up in Clear Creek in a park in Wheat Ridge on Wednesday morning.

Witnesses saw the car moving from the parking lot at Prospect Park in Wheat Ridge into the nearby creek on Wednesday morning. It floated a half-mile down the creek to 44th and Quail before it came to a rest.

"The guy came running by and hollered, 'Call 911, there's a car floating.' We looked and there was a red car floating down," a witness said.

The emergency call came in around 9 a.m. When authorities arrived they found the car stuck on a sandbar

Authorities have confirmed that the man has died.

Arvada fire spokesman Scott Pribble said it's not clear yet whether a problem with the car or a medical condition might have been to blame. He said the man had no pulse when rescuers arrived and it took them nearly two hours to get him out of the car because of the swift-moving water.

"It sounds like the gentleman either had a medical emergency or had an issue with the car or something," Pribble told CBS4. "From talking to the witnesses it doesn't sound like it was an intentional action. It sounds like it was just an accident."
