Homeowner Fights Back Against Would-Be Burglar

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4)- A would-be burglar met his match when he tried to break into a home in Colorado Springs. The 83-year-old woman who lives there, Betty Romano, decided to fight back.

She has lived in the same home for years, but didn't think she would ever have to take on a burglar.

"The doorbell rings, I look out and this guy is out there and he's putting on his hood," said Romano.

She said when she didn't answer the door, the man on her porch made his way around back.

"He could see me, I'm right here. I said, 'Get out of here, get out of here!' I yelled and he just looked at me and just goes on," said Romano.

Romano said the man started pounding away at the door, but just before he was able to break through, she stepped into action.

"Well, the door is open, I'm holding it on this side and I said, 'I'm calling the cops! I'm calling the cops!' He's still pounding with whatever and then I guess he believed me because, I'm holding the door. I mean, he's probably stronger than me, but he left," said Romano.

She said it was all instinct and that if it happened again, she would do it all over.

"Well, it's my house, you know. I don't want someone coming in here," said Romano.

Romano was able to get a description of the man she fought off and gave it to police. Although she said she feels safe in her home despite what happened, she does plan to get some mace in case it happens again.
