El Paso Deputy Fired After Fatal Crash

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - An El Paso county sheriff's deputy on leave for a car crash that killed an Air Force reservist has been fired.

The (Colorado Springs) Gazette reports that Rodney Fannin was fired last week after an internal investigation.

Fannin has been given a a misdemeanor citation for careless driving resulting in death. Investigators say Fannin ran a red light in Colorado Springs two weeks ago and hit the car driven by Capt. Vivian Elmo. She died at the scene.

Fannin was off-duty and in his personal vehicle at the time of the accident. The deputy was on probation for a careless driving conviction when the crash happened.

The newspaper says that sheriff's office officials did not say what their investigation found. Fannin is to be arraigned Oct. 19.
