Denver Teachers Union Sues Over School Status

DENVER (AP) -- Denver's teachers union wants a judge to block Denver Public Schools from allowing certain schools to opt out of union rules before they open.

The Denver Classroom Teachers Association is challenging the system over giving up to 10 new schools special status under the 2008 Innovation Schools Act. The teachers say the status should not apply to new schools because the status requires that a majority of the staff, administrators and parents support the status change.

District spokesman Michael Vaughn told The Denver Post that job applicants were made aware of the school's intent to apply for innovation status before they were hired.

The lawsuit mentions 10 schools. Six have already been approved, and DPS will vote on four next week.
