Denver police arrest suspect in deadly Saturday stabbing near South Hazel Court
A man is dead after having been stabbed in Denver Saturday and police say they have the man responsible in custody.
Police say they were called to Sanderson Gulch Park, near South Hazel Court and West Iowa Avenue around 4 p.m.
Joshua Vargas-Belmontes, 22, was found about an hour and a half after the stabbing that left one person dead. He now faces charges of first-degree murder.
The homicide is still under investigation, but police say they were aided by three witnesses they interviewed near the scene.
The victim was not publicly identified Sunday, but police say he is a Hispanic male, possibly in his 50s.
When police arrested and searched Vargas-Belmontes, they say in an arrest report that they found a knife with what appeared to be blood on it.
One of the witnesses said Vargas-Belmontes was aggressive, following them into a store, the arrest report reads.
Police say Vargas-Belmontes has refused to speak to police.
The victim, investigators say, had multiple sharp-force injuries to his torso. The Office of the Medical Examiner will ultimately identify the victim and make a final determination as to his cause and manner of death.
