Denver Cutthroats Go Deep Into Playoffs In 2nd Year

DENVER (CBS4) - The Fish are in the finals!

In only their second season of existence the Denver Cutthroats have made it to the finals of the Central Hockey League. They defeated the Arizona Sundogs over the weekend and now will play the winner of the series between the Quad-City Mallards and the defending champion Allen Americans.

"It's been a pretty good journey," Cutthroats Head Coach Derek Armstrong told CBS4's Vic Lombardi on Xfinity Monday Live.

Armstrong, a veteran of the NHL, said his team has had their eye on the championship ever since they formed.

"We've got amazing players on our team. They come from different backgrounds," he said.

On Saturday the Cutthroats shut out the Sundogs on their way to a 7-0 victory and won the Best of 7 series with their fourth win.

"Our last game we ended up putting it all together and won 7-0, and we had a great crowd in the rink and hopefully we can continue on in the push for the cup," said Armstrong.

Armstrong said their goal is to provide fans with a break from everything else in their lives for a few hours. And they hope their winning ways attract an even bigger crowd.

"That's one of our dreams is to win a championship and hopefully fill the rink," Armstrong said.

Armstrong said they have a great family atmosphere at the Denver Coliseum for their home games.

"We have a guppy run where when we score a goal the kids run around the concourse and people get to bang on the glass," he said. "There's lots of dancing in the stands and lots of people high five-ing."

The Denver Cutthroats will play on Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m. in the Ray Miron Presidents' Cup Finals at the Denver Coliseum.
