DA Investigates Officer's Fatal Shooting Of Gunman

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) -- The district attorney will determine whether an officer was justified in fatally shooting a gunman who took two people hostage in a medical building.

Twenty-eight-year-old Dominic Oliver of Colorado Springs was shot Tuesday. Police say he released the hostages before the shooting and no one else was injured.

Dozens of other people escaped the building before the shooting.

DA's spokeswoman Dee Richards says prosecutors are waiting for investigators' reports before starting their inquiry.

Police haven't publicly discussed a motive for the hostage-taking, and few details have been made public. Police spokeswoman Barbara Miller said Thursday the tapes of 911 calls are considered evidence.

Miller says the coroner ruled Oliver died from a gunshot wound and that the death was a homicide. A coroner's ruling doesn't indicate a crime was committed.
