DA Clears Coroner's Investigator In Father's Death

LOVELAND, Colo. (AP) - Prosecutors say a Larimer County coroner's investigator who fatally shot his father during a family argument was legally justified in the shooting.

Larimer County District Attorney Larry Abrahamson said in a letter released Monday that 25-year-old Matthew Canaga believed he and his family were in imminent danger when he shot his 51-year-old father, Patrick Canaga, last month.

The Loveland Reporter-Herald reports Patrick Canaga had threatened his son's wife and later went to the couple's house with a handgun, broke the window to the front door, and ignored repeated warnings from his son to go home.

Matthew Canaga was put on paid administrative leave after the shooting. Coroner's investigator Jere Gunderson told the Coloradoan that Canaga has been cleared to return to work.
