Crews Work To Contain Wildfire Near Alamosa

SANFORD, Colo. (AP) — The U.S. Forest Service says a wind-driven wildfire burning on an estimated 925 acres in southern Colorado is about 50 percent contained.

The Stockade Fire was reported Sunday afternoon south of Alamosa. Forest Service spokesman Mike Blakeman says that at one point, the fire threatened several buildings including Pike's Stockade, a national historic landmark where Zebulon Pike and his men camped in the early 1800s. However no structures have been lost.

Its cause was still under investigation Monday. It was burning in grass, willows and cottonwoods.

Blakeman says crews are hoping to fully contain the fire late Tuesday, as long as existing containment lines hold up despite breezy weather.
