Cruz Gains Endorsement Of Sen. Cory Gardner
DENVER (CBS4) - One of the most prominent Republicans in Colorado is endorsing Ted Cruz in the Texas Republican's longshot bid for the party's presidential nomination.
"This is still anybody's game and anybody's decision and I think he is the best Republican with the best values to cinch this nomination," Sen. Cory Gardner said on Tuesday, the same day that Cruz picked former technology executive Carly Fiorina for his running mate.
The endorsement by Colorado's Republican senator gives Cruz a boost in Colorado, a swing state, but a contested Republican national convention is the only hope Cruz has at this point to secure the nomination.
Gardner previously supported Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida, but Rubio dropped out of the race.
Gardner noted that Cruz was the only Republican presidential candidate to attend the state convention, and he won all of the Republican state delegates there.
"Who knows what will happen at the (national) convention and who knows what the outcome of the ballots will be, but the fact is, I believe he ... is the right nominee with the right values to stand firm for limited government," Gardner said.
Fiorina, a Californian, may help Cruz in that state's primary on June 7. Republican frontrunner Donald Trump could secure the nomination before the convention if he wins in California.
