Company Recalls Organic Baby Spinach Sold In Colorado Due To Salmonella
DENVER (CBS4) - A California company is recalling organic baby spinach that's sold in Colorado.
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment said Taylor Farms Retail, Inc. of Salinas, Calif., is recalling organic baby spinach after a random test conducted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture on a finished package of spinach showed potential contamination with Salmonella.
So far nobody has reported getting sick.
The products being recalled in Colorado are 5-ounce clamshell packages of "Private Selections" Organic Baby Spinach with the UPC code 0-11110-91128-5 and a "Best By" date 5-25-12 located on the lower right portion of the front label. Affected packages will have a package code of either TFRS 130B 1503 KT34 or TFRS 130B 1803 KT34.
Also recalled are products in 10-ounce clamshell packages of "Marketside" Organic Baby Spinach with the UPC code 6-8113132900-2 and a "Best By" date 5-25-12 located on the lower right portion of the front label.
Salmonella is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.
Healthy people infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain beginning 12-72 hours after infection. The illness usually lasts four to seven days. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. People exhibiting any of these symptoms should contact their health care provider.
