Colorado's Red-Light Camera Debate Heats Up

DENVER (AP) — A legislative showdown over red-light enforcement cameras is heating up in the Legislature.

The state Senate gave preliminary approval Thursday to a bill to compel towns to get voter approval to keep the cameras. Such a move would probably mean the end of the cameras, which are generally unpopular.

An outright ban on the devices awaits a vote in the House.

Meanwhile, Gov. John Hickenlooper is weighing in. Hickenlooper has long opposed efforts to make the cameras illegal. He has sent lawmakers a letter asking them to consider new limits on the cameras but not ban them.
