Colorado Lawmakers Face Contentious Home Stretch

DENVER (AP) - It's going to heat up quickly in the Colorado Capitol over the next three weeks, when lawmakers sprint to finish this year's legislative session with much of their work unfinished.

Democrats and Republicans have until May 11 to draw new congressional districts. Plus they'll consider a raft of divisive matters such as tuition rates for illegal immigrants and whether to make some common cold medicines prescription-only.

The year's most lauded accomplishment so far is a budget for next fiscal year -- but even that isn't quite sewed up yet and ready to sign into law.

Democrats and Republicans locked horns over redistricting last week and agreed to try again this week. Lawmakers are required by law to redraw congressional lines every 10 years, but the process is often tense.
