Colorado GOP Chooses New Leadership
CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - Colorado Republicans have ousted their state party chairman over concerns that the GOP should be in better shape.
GOP chairman Ryan Call lost re-election Saturday at the annual GOP convention in Centennial. Call was seeking a third term, but he lost to former gubernatorial candidate Steve House of Adams County.
Call issued a statement after the election, saying the state party has made great strides during the past few years.
"Not only did we take back the state Senate, increased our numbers in the state House, win three of the four statewide races, retained every Republican congressional seat, but we also defeated an incumbent U.S. senator," Mark Udall.
Call said the party still faces serious challenges going into the 2016 elections, and he wished House "the best of luck."
Even though the party is coming off its best election in years, some Republican activists say results could have been better with someone else in charge.
Last November, Colorado saw 100,000 more Republican votes than Democratic votes. But Democrats hung on to the governor's office and the state House.
Call's decision to seek Denver as the site of the 2016 Republican National Convention rubbed some the wrong way. Some said the effort took money and time away from GOP candidates.
