Car Crashes Into Propane Tanks, Fire Erupts

DENVER (CBS4/AP) - Authorities say a car veered off Interstate 76 in Adams County and crashed into a lot storing propane tanks, and some of the tanks caught fire.

The Colorado State Patrol says the driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries after the crash at about 6:40 p.m. on Saturday.

Troopers identified him as Justin Kardas, 21, of Denver. He was the only occupant. Troopers said he was driving about 100 miles per hour in a brand new car before the crash.

"It could have been a lot worse, the rest of the tanks could have exploded, the ones that had propane in them," Trooper Heath Griscavage said. "So (the fire department) did pretty good getting out here and getting it taken care of."

Westbound lanes of I-76 were been shut for about three hours and eastbound lanes for an hour.

The cause of the crash is under investigation.
