Building Evacuation Update: Original Suspect Turns Self In
DENVER (CBS4) - A man wanted in a domestic assault case turned himself in on Monday, hours after a downtown Denver office building was evacuated as police searched for him.
The Petroleum Building on the 16th Street Mall was the site of the manhunt Monday morning, and police actually wound up arresting a different person in the case.
Police had thought they were looking for Robert Jackson, 28, who has an outstanding warrant for escape and one for robbery. They said they thought he was responsible for a domestic incident in Aurora that happened early Monday morning, and they thought they spotted him running into the building.
Heavily armed police officers and SWAT officers searched floor-by-floor for several hours.
Jackson wound up turning himself in Monday afternoon in Aurora and faces assault and battery charges.
Joseph Smith was the person police found who had run into the building. Smith has been arrested 12 times in the past three years for a wide range of crimes from drugs to theft.
So far Denver police haven't released specific details on the charges Smith faces, and Aurora police has yet to release a new booking photo of Jackson.
