Broncos Release Linebacker Joe Mays
DENVER (CBS4) - The Denver Broncos have released linebacker Joe Mays just days before the start of Training Camp.
Mays was relegated mostly to special teams duty in the middle of last season after being beaten out by veteran Keith Brooking at the middle linebacker position. He was also given a $50,000 fine and a one game suspension for an illegal hit on Houston QB Matt Schaub that sent his helmet -- and a small part of his ear -- flying.
Mays was placed on injured reserve in late October after the Broncos-Saints game, when he broke his leg while blocking for punt returner Trindon Holliday.
Mays started in 21 of the 24 games he played with the Broncos in their past three seasons and totaled 124 tackles.
Before playing with the Broncos Mays played for the Eagles.
