Apartment Fire In Lakewood Damages 6 Units

LAKEWOOD, Colo. (CBS4)- A fire broke out at the Belmar Villas apartment building at 759 S. Reed in Lakewood Monday evening. Six units were damaged, leaving about 20 people out of their homes for the night.

Fire investigators said the fire started on the second floor in a plumbing closet between apartments. It was sparked while maintenance was under way in the closet.

The fire raced up the third floor into the attic. Four of the six units were damaged by fire, the other two with water used to extinguish the blaze.

"When firefighters arrived there was smoke billowing out the vents, out of the windows, there was a pretty good fire scene when they arrived," said West Metro Fire Public Information Officer Micki Trost.

No one was hurt in the fire. Firefighters did rescue a golden retriever from one of the apartments.

Those displaced from their homes are meeting with the Red Cross.
