Anti-Fracking Group Targets Lafayette City Council
LAFAYETTE, Colo. (CBS4) - A group called Boulder County United is going after hydraulic fracturing and the group is targeting the Lafayette City Council.
At a meeting on Tuesday the anti-fracking group plans to ask council members for a halt in drilling until they look into the community impact. The group also wants a vote on whether fracking should be allowed.
Fort Collins is getting close to a city wide fracking ban. The final vote is likely to come on Tuesday. It's a point of contention between Fort Collins and state leaders as Gov. John Hickenlooper said he'll sue any city that enacts a ban.
Hickenlooper says banning fracking violates private property rights and suggests strict regulations instead of a ban.
The vote comes one week after an oil and gas well four miles east of Fort Collins leaked 84,000 gallons of so-called flow-back water, which can be a byproduct of the fracking process. The state says it contained fracking chemicals.
