Air Force Academy Appoints New Athletic Director

AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. (AP) — The athletic director at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in New York has been chosen to run the sports program at the Air Force Academy.

The academy announced Tuesday that James A. Knowlton will be its new athletic director, replacing Hans Mueh, who is retiring.

The academy says Knowlton's appointment is tentative until all pre-employment requirements are fulfilled.

Knowlton has been athletic director at Rensselaer for seven years. The school is in Troy, New York.

Mueh is stepping down Jan. 31.

The academy has been under renewed scrutiny over past allegations about sexual misconduct and drug use by athletes. The Defense Department announce last month it is reviewing whether the school adequately investigated the allegations.

The school is located just north of Colorado Springs.
