83-Year-Old Man Swept Away By Clear Creek
IDAHO SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - An 83-year-old man known for picking up trash around Idaho Springs is dead after being swept away in Clear Creek.
Rescuers found Carol White's body about three miles downstream from where he fell in Monday afternoon.
Police Sgt. Jim Vogt said White apparently fell in while trying to pick up an empty Doritos bag. He said the saturated soil on the bank gave way under him, throwing him into the creek, which is running about 10 times as high as normal. The bag and his shoe were later found on the bank.
Vogt said the creek's flow is more like what would be normally be seen at the peak of the spring runoff.
