3 Aurora Firefighters Hospitalized Fighting House Fire

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - Three firefighters have been hospitalized after responding to house fire in Aurora.

The fire happened at about 7 p.m. Thursday in the 1400 block of South Biscay Way, near Tower and Louisiana. The family was able to get out safely.

According to officials, an explosion happened when firefighters opened the front door, causing a backdraft.

The firefighters were said to have non-life-threatening injuries and were taken to the hospital as a precaution.

Fire investigators believe the family inside had started a fire in the fireplace when the flames escaped into the attic.

"It could be likely that when firefighters opened the attic to search for the fire it caused the explosion," said Aurora Fire Dept. Capt. Allen Robnett.

Robnett said the fire is an example of a good reminder about regular fireplace maintenance.
