22-Month-Old Girl Dies After Being Run Over By Van

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A 22-month-old girl has died after being run over by a van Friday afternoon in the Sienna Community parking lot in Aurora.

The condos are located in the 900 block of South Zeno Way near East Mississippi Avenue and East Alameda Parkway.

Aurora police say a 2001 Dodge white cargo van was going through the parking lot when it ran over the girl, who has been identified as Laniece Fletcher. She was taken to The Children's Hospital where she died.

The van is owned by the Kids Wheels company, which takes children to specialized learning programs.

"The van lady didn't see her and she ran the girl over and right when I looked the baby was on the ground," neighbor Nathan Rawlins said. "When the cops got here the baby's lips were very blue and her legs were bleeding."

"My heart just stopped, my stomach was hurting, I just wanted to cry," another neighbor said. "I felt so bad for the family."

Residents say the community is full of children and there isn't a designated play area, so children often resort to playing in the parking lot.

"Everybody plays in this parking lot; cars go so fast," a resident said.

The Traffic Bureau and Crimes Against Children units are both investigating to see if charges are appropriate.

A makeshift memorial was set up at the scene Saturday morning.
