2 Colorado Men Dead In Wyoming Plane Crash
ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (CBS4)- The bodies of two Colorado men, Gilmer Mickey, 55, of Englewood and Bob Albert, 55, of Fort Collins, were recovered at about 2 p.m. Saturday by the Sweetwater County Sheriff's Office in Wyoming.
Mickey, the pilot, and his passenger Albert, took off from the Ralph Wenz Field Airport in Pinedale on the morning of May 18 in Mickey's single-engine 1973 Bellanco Model 17-30A. They were bound for Fort Collins.
The plane crashed 72 miles from the airport in the rugged Oregon Buttes-Continental Peak area of northern Sweetwater County. The wreckage was discovered that same day at about 12:15 p.m. in a remote area about 45 miles north of Rock Springs.
"It's in a hellish place, said Detective Dick Blush with the local sheriff's office in Rock Springs.
"There were reports of severe weather in the area during the past 24 hours,' said Lt Colonel Mike Daniels with the Colorado Civil Air Patrol on Friday.
Daniels said the cause of the crash will be under investigation by the NTSB. Federal Transportation Safety Board investigators arrived in Rock Springs on Friday, and were coordinating their efforts with county officials.
