1 Dead, 1 In Serious Condition After SUV Crash In Aurora

AURORA, Colo. (CBS4) - A man was killed in an SUV crash early Sunday morning in Aurora.

Lt. Chuck DeShazer with Aurora police said at 2 a.m. police and fire rescue responded to a vehicle collision near the intersection of South Laredo Street and East Dartmouth Avenue.

"Arriving units located a purple 2001 Dodge Durango in the creek which runs through Meadowood Park. The Durango had extensive damage and was occupied by the driver, Tyrel Kinard, 23, and Enedina Cardenas, 23, both of Aurora," DeShazer said in a statement. "Due to the damage sustained during the collision, both occupants had to been extricated from the wreckage."

Kinard suffered very severe injuries and later died at a local hospital. Cardenas was transported by helicopter to Swedish hospital with serious injuries.

Police believe the Durango was eastbound on Dartmouth from South Laredo at a high rate of speed.

"The Durango left the right side of the roadway and began traveling through Meadowood Park where two trees were hit," DeShazer said. "The Durango continued eastbound through the park toward the creek where the vehicle became airborne and the front of the Durango impacted the east side of the creek bank and retaining wall subsequently coming to rest in the creek."

Police believe alcohol and speeding were factors in the crash.
