IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) - Police are hoping surveillance video of a man robbing a truck stop at gunpoint will be the key to catching him. It happened Tuesday afternoon at the Big D Travel Center off North Loop 12 in Irving.

By the time the thief walked out her door, Karen DeWeese had one thought going through her mind.

"Thank God that I'm alive. Thank God I'm alive," she said Wednesday.

The cashier says she could tell as soon as she saw him that the man was trouble.

"I noticed he had the hat, and he was coming real fast, and I already knew," DeWeese said.

She remembers the man ordered her to open the register and quickly took the drawer full of cash, but he did stop long enough to make sure he got everything.

"Once he got it, he went to leave, and then he turned around, and he saw there was a little more that he missed, and he came... he said, what's that? And I said, just take it, just take it, and he did," DeWeese said.

Paul Mood is the general manager. He says he's not sure what to make of a thief who would strike in broad daylight.

"Either he was very professional or maybe not too professional because that's usually a busy time," Mood said.

"I mean he scared me, but I feel sad for him, and I hope that he gets help or whatever in his life has made him decide to do that, I hope that he reaches out for some help," DeWeese said.

At this point police say it isn't clear whether the suspect drove away after the robbery or left on foot, so detectives were back out at the truck stop Wednesday reviewing more footage looking for more clues.

The owner is offering a $1,000 reward for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of this thief.

Anyone with information about the suspect or the robbery is asked to contact Irving police at 972-273-1010.
