IRVING (CBSDFW.COM) — What started as a home robbery became a deadly shooting between a suspect and police early Saturday morning in Irving.

It began when Irving police responded to a call reporting a home invasion robbery in the 700 block of Jeff Court around 1:40 a.m., but the incident didn't end until around 7:15 a.m. — 5 1/2 hours later. Police say the three suspects fled, triggering a search with help from a Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter crew. Two were eventually found and arrested. The department said the third suspect fired multiple shots at officers and was killed by their return fire. No officers were hurt.

Police say upon arrival officers saw two suspects who were running away from the home on Jeff Court turn around and go back inside at the sight of police. Shortly after, the victims came outside and said all three suspects ran out the back door. Police say the victims were not hurt.

A Texas DPS helicopter crew aided the search. Police say they found one suspect — 26-year-old Jaime Alexander Gutierrez — and arrested him around 3:20 a.m.

Officers found the other two suspects nearly an hour and a half later in a backyard in the 600 block of Jeff Court. That's when shots rang out.

Police say one suspect shot at three officers, and when the officers returned fire, the suspect was hit and killed. Police are withholding the identity pending a Dallas County Medical Examiner report. The officers weren't hurt.

The third suspect — 26-year-old Obed Isau Zavala — fled and hid under a back porch of a home in the 600 block of West Sixth Street until officers found and arrested him around 7:15 a.m., the department said.

Police say Zavala and Gutierrez will be arraigned on charges of aggravated robbery. The three officers involved in the shooting are on administrative leave pending an internal investigation.

The investigations into the robbery and the shooting are ongoing.
