Young Adults Living With Parents Will Fly The Nest In 2015
By Dr. Marciene Mattleman
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - In 2012, 35% of Americans 18-31 were living at their parents' homes, an increase from 32% in 2007. Several things will help them pack their bags and move out in 2015.
Most important, the job market has improved which will help young people move out and the cost of housing will remain reasonable, except in "crazy" (author's word) places like New York and San Francisco.
Many who have put their lives on hold paying debt, delaying marriage and children will now be able to afford those plans, and for women the biological clock is ticking.
Transitions are hard but young Americans are luckier than most. Parents will still have their kids at home in Europe where "sky-high" unemployment has kept nearly half of 18 to 30-year-olds without work in some countries.
