Road rage incident ends in crash, arrest in SW Philadelphia

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Police are investigating a case of road rage that began Thursday morning in Delaware County and ended in Southwest Philadelphia. CBS Philadelphia was told the wild scene all started in Glenolden around 11 a.m.

Police say a black BMW SUV and a blue truck were involved. Police say the driver of the BMW hit a blue pickup and didn't stop.

That led to a chase into the city when the BMW lost control and hit the 12th police district headquarters at 65th Street and Woodland Avenue.

The lieutenant on scene says it's through the grace of God no one walking on the sidewalk was hurt.

"It sounded like an explosion," Ali Yammue, a neighbor, said.

He watched the chaos play out right in front of his home in Southwest Philadelphia.

Police say the BMW then backed up, raced down 65th Street, flipped and landed on the sidewalk as the driver tried making a turn.

"The car was speeding and flipped," Yammue said. "It caught fire and the guys got out and started fighting each other."

CBS Philadelphia was told the driver of the BMW  crawled out of the broken window and started swinging.

The two drivers then started fist-fighting in the middle of the street but officers quickly took both men into custody, sources say.

The crash happened at 65th Street and Grays Avenue around 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

"Scared! I turned around and tried getting back into my house. It was intense," Yammue said.

Authorities say there was minor damage to the police station, a crack in the wall. Philadelphia License & Inspection did come out and inspect it and said it was safe.

The driver in the SUV that flipped was taken to the hospital to be checked out.

Authorities say he will likely be facing several charges.
