Winter Storm Warning: Snow Will Be Intermittent, Intensity Will Vary Throughout
by Justin Drabick
A clipper-type system over the Great Lakes will continue to move into the mid-Atlantic tonight, then develop into a stronger storm offshore during the day on Tuesday. A winter storm warning will go into effect at midnight for Philadelphia, surrounding suburbs and all of South New Jersey. This is not a well-organized storm system, so the snow will be intermittent and vary in intensity during the entire event.
TIMING: Snow showers will begin to arrive around Philly from 9-11 p.m. and continue on and off, varying in intensity through the day Tuesday, before ending late Tuesday night. The steadiest snow looks to occur Tuesday evening.
IMPACTS: Slippery travel is expected overnight with some snow-covered untreated surfaces. During the day on Tuesday, temperatures will be above freezing. However, any heavy periods of snow that develop could accumulate on the roads. Both the morning and evening commutes will be impacted with slower travel.
COASTAL IMPACTS: With the strong offshore storm that passed by today and the continued onshore wind flow, tides will continue to run higher than normal. A coastal flood warning will continue through Tuesday for the NJ and DE coasts. Minor tidal flooding is possible around times on high tide this evening and again tomorrow morning.
AMOUNTS: The location of the highest accumulations will depend on how rapidly and where the storm develops offshore on Tuesday. 3-6" is possible around Philly, into South NJ and DE with 1-3" closer to the Lehigh Valley and along the immediate coast.
