PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (CBS) -- January is National Soup Month!

At McGillin's Olde Ale House, on Drury Street in center city Philadelphia, owner Chris Mullins says they offer free soup to their patrons year-round.

What kind of soup?

"It varies by season," he tells What's Cooking.  "This month, at the beginning of the year, we'll have lentil soup.  Lentils look like money, so lentil is a good luck soup."

In the podcast, Mullins shows how soup can help you get the most out of the food in your kitchen at home.

Glenn Gross of Fat Jack's Barbecue is preparing to to open several more franchise locations in the Philadelphia area.

He's also scheduled to appear soon on the "World Food Championships" series, airing on A&E early in the year.

Gross says the series was filmed in Las Vegas, and he really enjoyed the experience.

"They were interviewing us while we were working, while we were cooking," he says.  "We did some 'pre' stuff.  It's not the first TV gig that I had -- I was actually on BBQ Pitmasters this past season, and I kinda got a little taste of it, and I liked it!"

And the first-ever Philly Chef Conference takes place on January 13th and 14th, hosted by Drexel University.

"The Philly Chef Conference is aimed for younger chefs, younger cooks, to get together and learn a lot about the business side of running restaurants," says Mike Traud, director of hospitality and management at Drexel, "but it's also for chefs to get together and actually talk about restaurant issues, how to develop the restaurant industry in Philadelphia."
