Weather: Summer Soaker

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --- Incredibly heavy rains brought extensive flooding to the region Tuesday night into Wednesday morning.

Numerous locations saw 2-4" off rain, and that's just on average. Atlantic City established a new official record for August 12th with 4.41" of rain, breaking the mark of 3.13" set back in 1901.

Millville more than doubled that value with 8.92"! Roadways across the area were flooded out, and many cars became stuck as a result. The good news is....*pause*....better weather is on the horizon!

The culprit in all of this is an unusually deep trough spinning over southern Canada, dragging a number or fronts through the northeast. As this low continues to spin away, clouds will give way to sun later on Wednesday. Behind that, high pressure builds in, bringing dry conditions to the region through Saturday.

The other story will be more below average temps. Wednesday will hover around 80, and Friday will struggle to get out of the 70s! The weekend should see a bit of a rebound, especially by Sunday.

Today's Highs:

Philly - 84

Shore - 86

Poconos - 76

On this day in weather history...
1905 - A Sunday thunderstorm caused thousands of dollars in damage to the Mt. Holly
region. At Milltown, hailstones as big as bird eggs (hen eggs = 2") fell in great quantities. Windows were broken, apples and other fruit were cut, and whole fields of tomatoes were laid to waste. Philadelphia recorded 1.00" of precipitation.

1919 - High winds and heavy rain struck the Mid Atlantic Coast region. In NJ, winds gusted
to 60 mph in Atlantic City, and 9" of rain fell at Tuckerton. The wind and rain leveled crops and stripped trees of fruit causing several million dollars in damage.

1956 - An F2 tornado moved southeast from just east of Lansdale to Montgomeryville, damaging homes and destroying trailers.
