Weather: Autumn Chill Arrives Saturday

By Geoff Bansen

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- For today's forecast, I decided to write a haiku:

Sun will mix with clouds
A cold front approaches late
Weekend will be cool

Don't you wish all forecasts could be so brief?

Friday will be a decent day, with seasonable temperatures. The cold front arrives late tonight and the timing of it brings the rain in early Saturday morning through the midday. While western locations will break out into sunshine by the afternoon, points east of Philadelphia may take a little longer.

A chill sets in on Saturday night, with Sunday morning lows ranging from the upper 30s to the north, 40s around Philadelphia, and low 50s further south and along the coast (helped a little by the still mild ocean waters). This may be the first heat-worthy night of the year, if not the big blankets!

Today's Highs:
Philly -- 72
Shore -- 71
Poconos -- 65

On This Day In Weather History ...
1841 -- A violent rain storm did immense damage along the east coast. More than 100 ships were lost, and many poor mariners perished. It was estimated that $2 million of goods in these vessels was destroyed. Such a severe and destructive storm had not occurred on the American coast for many years. PHL received 1.90" of rain. (This was the Great Gale of New England, a hurricane that recurved off of the North Carolina coast and passed offshore Cape Cod).

1869 -- Significant flooding occurred. The water was 11 1/2' deep over Fairmont Dam. Floods were reported from Virginia to Maine. PHL received a total of 3.85" of rain. This flood carried away the Penrose Ferry Bridge and two bridges at Manayunk. This storm was a hurricane known as Saxby's Gale, and was particularly severe in the Canadian maritimes.
