DA: 15-Year-Old Girl Was Driving In Crash That Killed 3 Local Students
HOLLAND, Pa. (CBS) – The Wayne County District Attorney says a 15-year-old girl from New York was the driver in a fatal car accident in the Poconos over the weekend.
The accident, which occurred late morning Saturday, August 30, took the lives of three teenage boys from Bucks County.
Authorities say three others were in the vehicle at the time, including the 15-year-old driver, a 16-year-old female passenger and a 15-year-old male, also from Bucks County. They were all treated at local hospitals and released.
Officials say the vehicle the teen girl was driving was registered to her father. It is believed that the teenage girls, from the New York area, picked up the boys and then drove to a local restaurant for breakfast. When they were driving home along a left hand curve, the vehicle's right tire traveled off of the road way and flipped over multiple times.
Three of the four boys in the vehicle, Ryan Lesher, Shamus Digney and Cullen Keffer, were killed.
A witness near the scene told investigators he saw the vehicle before the accident and it was believed to be traveling at a high rate of speed.
The District Attorney stated: "This is a parent's worst nightmare and a terrible tragedy that the Pennsylvania State Police will investigate to the fullest. The work of the Pennsylvania State Police, the Lakeville Fire Company and Emergency Medical personnel in responding so quickly to the scene and handling it so professionally is commendable. I thank all of the first responders for their vigilance and care to all the teenagers in this accident."
Council Rock South student Andrew Goldberg says, "The teachers, you could tell it was on their minds, but they held it together for the freshmen."
There is a candlelight vigil being held tonight at the school.
The D.A. says there will be no further comment until the investigation is complete.
