Water main break in Philadelphia today sends mud, rushing water down Girard Avenue
Crews are on the scene of a water main break that has sent mud and water flowing through multiple streets in Philadelphia Sunday.
The flooding is centered around 4th Street and Girard Avenue in the Northern Liberties section of the city. Social media users said flooding is also on nearby Cambridge Street.
According to the Philadelphia Water Department, crews were alerted to a 20-inch broken main on the 1100 block of N. 4th St.
Currently, no properties are without water as crews have been able to isolate the issue and turn off the impacted transmission main.
Because of the main break, one vehicle is stuck in the street and a nearby sidewalk is also heavily damaged, officials said.
A worker at The Dally apartment complex said their maintenance team was called in around 9 a.m. due to a water main break.
There's 20 feet of water in the basement of the complex, and the gym and community rooms are underwater, the employee said. No units in the complex are damaged, but residents are still displaced from the building while alarms continue going off.
PWD is helping neighbors pump out water from their properties while they work with crews to start the repair process.
As of now, there is no word yet on how long it will take for all the repairs and damages to be done, according to officials.
Members of PECO, the Philadelphia police and the Philadelphia Fire Department are on the scene.
