Volunteers Fan Out Across New Jersey For 9/11 Day of Service

CAMDEN, N.J. (CBS) -- Volunteers throughout the Garden State are pitching in this week to help their communities, in honor of the anniversary of the September 11th terrorist attacks, which occurred thirteen years ago today.
Sherry Fazio, a spokeswoman for the nonprofit group Jersey Cares, says projects are happening throughout the state, from Bergen County to Camden.
At Veterans Memorial Family School, kids were being taught by Verizon volunteers about solar energy.
What's the connection between solar power and 9/11?
"There's not a connection specifically between solar power and 9/11," Fazio tells KYW Newsradio. "The connection is the service, so this happens to be a service project for 9/11."
She adds that at some of the community locations, volunteers are conducting history lessons about the 9/11 attacks.
"This year we have about 15 different projects," she said. "We're mobilizing about 500 volunteers throughout the state. We actually have volunteers harvesting crops that will be donated to food banks, we have volunteers doing environmental work. We also have volunteers in remembrance gardens."
