Verizon Treads Carefully On Proposed New 'Net Neutrality' Rules

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - Now that the FCC is prepared to move ahead with proposed new rules related to speeds on the Internet (see related story), one of the large communication companies with a major footprint in this region is reacting cautiously.
Verizon officials were at the Navy Yard's business complex Thursday for an event to promote the spread of their Quantum Internet service to incubator businesses.
But, a top Verizon manager for the region deferred questions about the FCC's Net Neutrality moves to a company spokesman.
Spokesman Lee Gierczynski says the company is committed to an open Internet with appropriate speeds for all.

However, he says, Verizon is concerned the FCC might consider changes that could stifle competition, "Any type of regulation that would be a throwback to the 1930's era could jeopardize any type of future investment by companies like Verizon."
That concern lies in the possibility the FCC would consider classifying Internet providers as utilities, something Verizon suggests could subject them to even more regulation.
