Driver charged after crashing minivan into Philadelphia police headquarters

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Police have charged a driver after he crashed his minivan into the front entrance of the Philadelphia Public Services Building Tuesday morning.

The 71-year-old man faces charges including criminal mischief, institutional vandalism, causing and risking a catastrophe, and more.

No one was injured, but the front of the building was damaged from the crash.

Police were seen pulling the driver from the vehicle and taking him into custody before he was later put into a police vehicle and transported away.

The driver was shouting something repeatedly that we could not understand.

Police later said the driver was a 71-year-old man who was traveling southbound on Broad Street when he crossed into the northbound lanes and then swerved into the building, seriously damaging the doors.

No one was hurt.

Police immediately took the driver to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

They say a mental health evaluation will be ordered by a court.
