'The Distance Between Us' Author To Speak At Villanova University

VILLANOVA, Pa. (CBS) --- "One Book Villanova" is focusing on the story of a woman born into poverty in Mexico who grows up in the US, and graduates college. The author, Reyna Grande appears at Villanova University tonight at 7:30pm.

Her book "The Distance Between Us" portrays Reyna Grande's life from abject poverty in the town of Iguala, running the border with her father and siblings, and becoming the first in her family to graduate from college.

She says she was physical abused by her father, thought she would never learn to speak English and endured many prejudices. But that hasn't dampened the message she gives young people.

"I always encourage, especially young people, I tell them just continue to work on your dreams, continue to get an education, and be ready! 'Cause you never know what might happen tomorrow and there might be an opportunity tomorrow," she says.

Grande details her journey from the tiny village of Iguala and her illegal entry into the US, and then the education which saved her and changed her life.

Grande says she was lucky to have a mentor in high school to encourage her on her professional path. Her memoir has been revised and will be published as a middle school book next year.
