The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Recognizes The Catholic Church's Year Of Mercy
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- The Archdiocese of Philadelphia Sunday evening held a celebration at the Cathedral Basilica of Saints Peter and Paul recognizing the start of the Catholic Church's year of mercy.
The extraordinary Jubilee year of mercy is a time for Catholics around the world to be more cognizant of their actions and to make a stronger effort to live the way Jesus taught.
"We want to turn away from sin and we want to live in right relationship with him and with one another," said Father Dennis Gil, the cathedral's rector.
They encourage people coming to worship there to enter through their Jubilee holy door, which is in the front of the building, and is marked by a sign and flowers.
"Many people will come to the cathedral to pass through that door as a sign of passing through Christ the gate, turning away from those things in our lives that shouldn't be there, like especially sin and walking with Christ according to his way," Gil said. "His grace his gospel way."
The year of mercy which is celebrated in different events at Catholic churches around the world ends next November.
