PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Temple University is helping high school students from around Philadelphia learn about urban leadership and community engagement through digital literacy.
During the six week "Urban Apps & Maps Program", high schoolers worked with college students to strengthen their business and entrepreneurship skills through hands-on projects, like building websites.
"My group's website is a website that's based around spreading awareness about our community and cleaning it up and making sure our eco system stays clean and green and we keep it safe." says 16-year-old Yaw Ajarko.
Ajarko is a rising junior at Mastery Charter Lenfest. He says the program helped give him a strong knowledge of multiple computer coding languages.
"Now I have skills I know a lot of people don't know how to do and I can actually apply those and I can put that into my everyday life."
"We've been learning a lot of HTML and CSS to help us code this web site" says 16-year-old Sarah Galal, a junior at Carver High School.
Galal says she's really proud of the progress she made throughout the program.
" The high school dropout rate was really a big problem." says Galal. "What we wanted to do was make a mentorship program for students to find individuals, mentors that have the same interest as them to work on projects together.
Some of the other projects students worked on include an app that rates attendees experience at the Pennsylvania Ballet and one that monitors environmental conditions, like temperature and humidity.
