Temple Lacrosse Captain Shares Personal Struggle With Eating Disorder

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- A local superstar athlete, on the campus of Temple University, makes winning look easy. However, the real battles for her, took place off the field.

Kara Stroup is the captain of Temple lacrosse. She started every game for her four years in school, but it wasn't always easy.

Stroup battled an eating disorder and suicidal thoughts while a senior at Garnet Valley High School.

"I struggled with my eating disorder for like seven years before I, well one, accepted that it was real and then deciding that I needed to get help and that I couldn't do it anymore," Stroup said. "There's like a lot of things that go into that like whether it's pride, or wanting to even like get better."

Stroup is now a national finalist for YRL One Love Unsung Hero Award which recognizes a student-athlete who helps their team achieve success off the field.
