Target Will Take Unwanted Gift Cards And Trade You

PHILADELPHIA (CBS) --  Did you get any gift cards this holiday that you weren't exactly thrilled to receive?

Well, instead of just letting them collect dust in a drawer, one big box retailer is allowing you to trade them in.

Consumer Reporter Jim Donovan has more information on how Target is now offering you a trade.

For years Jim has been telling us about websites that allow you to swap and sell gift cards.

But many people quite honestly, don't want to go through the hassle online.

Now Target is making it easier.

Normally gift cards are one of the safest bets when it comes to holiday presents, but not always.

So that is why Target recently began a trade-in program, buying unwanted gift cards from customers and giving them store credit in return.

Here's how it works.

- The program is available at locations offering target mobile and trade-in counters, normally found in the electronics department.

- Customers simply bring in their unwanted gift card.

- An employee will give them an offer based on the resale value of the card.

- If the customer accepts the offer, they'll get a target gift card for that amount right on the spot.

Target is partnering with Cardpool for the program.

Cardpool is a website that buys gift cards and offers cash in return.

Customers can bring gift cards from more than 600 brands, including Old Navy, Cheesecake Factory, Staples, and Pottery Barn.
