PHILADELPHIA (CBS) - If you have nerve damage caused by diabetes and high blood sugar, you're not alone. More than half the people with diabetes have diabetic nerve damage, which is called diabetic neuropathy. It can occur at any time, but the older you are and the longer you have had diabetes, the more likely you are to develop it.
In the vast majority of cases, the symptoms of diabetic neuropathy are mild for several years. Most people might not know that nerve damage is happening. The symptoms of diabetic nerve damage depend on the type of neuropathy you have and which nerves are affected by it.
Here are just a few:
Loss of balance, major sensitivity to touch, muscle weakness, pain, burning, tingling or numbness and slow healing cuts or blisters.
There are other causes but this is a concern.
