Masked Gunman Shot Dead During Home Invasion In Lawncrest
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) -- Philadelphia Police say a man was shot and killed while trying to commit an armed robbery at a home in the city's Lawncrest neighborhood.
Police were called to the home in the 6100 block of Reach Street around 11:30 p.m. Monday for a report of shots fired. Once there, officers found a 35-year old man who had been shot twice by the homeowner.
Chief Inspector Scott Small says the masked man had entered the home, armed with a gun, and tried to rob the residence, but that's when the 27-year-old homeowner grabbed his own gun and jumped to action.
"(He) fired at least four shots at the 35-year-old who was committing the robbery, striking (him) at least two times, once in the neck and once in the chest. The 35-year-old collapsed and dropped his handgun by his feet."
Small says emergency responders tried to revive the suspect, but he was pronounced dead a little after midnight.
The homeowner and four other people inside the house at the time were taken in by police for interviews.
Authorities believe that some drugs and money found in the basement of the home may have been the target of the robbery.
