WEST CHESTER, Pa. (CBS) -- West Chester University donated 100 iPads to a Mt. Airy school.

For several years, Carol Smith, associate professor of literacy at West Chester university studied iPad based learning in Haverford and Phoenixville.

"But we felt bad that those experiences were taking place quite frankly in more wealthy districts, and we wanted to bring that experience to an urban school."

"Too often, schools have technology, they put it in teachers' hands, teachers don't know what to do with it."

Eighth grader John Capatulo-Roni says not a lot of students here own iPads and it's great to be able to use them in school.

"It's really exciting. People are taking videos, looking at the new apps and it seems that they're excited to use them."
